I'll stick with my 15 quid Nokia 1112; it makes calls AND sends text messages!!!

Interesting to see how a different culture to mine uses technology (a rather sweet combination of cute iconography and inventiveness). And a good read.

I don't generally like Apple stuff (apart from OS X); is the interface that much better than my Nokia?

Good luck for everybody waiting in a line in Tokyo. I was laughing about this people two weeks ago in switzerland, I thaugth it would be just another marketing-hype to wait early in the morning in front of a telephone-shop. But till now I wasn't able to buy an iphone in any shop here in switzerland. It realy seems to be a huge a huge demand all over europe - because it's a great, little, smart toy for good people like us.

I am a great Apple fan. I’ve had a few iPods, an MBP and also did have (before it died) a PB as well.

I can understand people getting excited about new gadgets etc but what I find totally sad/odd/over-the-top is people camping out over night outside a shop just to become the first to own a new piece of technology.

I wonder what drives these people to feel that they need to be the first people to get the new iPhone? Are they suckers for marketing, are they addicted to technology, do they all lack individuality and just want to follow the flock, or do they just need a new phone?

I won’t be getting an iPhone just yet: the main reason, my old phone (Sony Ericsson T610) still works, so no need to buy another one. End of story…

PS: The first post had the wrong email address in there, opps!

Personally I can't stand the iPhone. I have no interest in a flat touch keyboard - not on my main computer, and not on a phone. You have to be staring at it to interact with it. I am no Apple hater - this is typed on a MBP and I love my iPod. I especially love interacting with my iPod without looking at it, in my pocket. No can do with the iPhone.

The iPhone is expensive, more than some cheap laptops. Yet it can't do what a normal computer can do. I trade off disposability - for what? 16GB of storage space? That's 1/10th of what I have on my iPod.

The iPhone's app store and background processing scheme remind me of everything bad about Apple - walled garden, too much control, closed systems. Give me open standards and total control over what I own. I won't buy a $1000 phone that I can only access through iTunes - which, btw, is becoming the most bloated over-extended app I know of. The background processing system is a convoluted Apple-centric nightmare. The closed environment is exactly the opposite of everything I love about the internet.

The iPhone isn't the future, it's CompuServe. The real future is yet to come. Open Systems beat closed every time. It's successful for now because there's no other option. But when we have real handheld computers the iPhone will hopefully be a distant, bad, memory...

Theo, from what I've gathered, there is an audience for the iPhone, so all those who claimed that the technological inferiority (can't change the battery, no TV, weak camera, no credit card function) would lead to a sales disaster seem to be wrong.

The UI makes up for the technological inferiority; so it's a similar situation as wii vs PS3: Technologically, the PS3 crushes the wii, yet the wii scored. The difference though is that the iPhone is more expensive than most "normal" cellphones.

My guess: 5% market share is possible, 10% would be a huge success, anything above 10% would change the Japanese market (not likely).
